installing XP/vista via mounting it?

i know you could just put in the XP/vista (i think vista can do it not sure) cd/dvd in windows and it would run an upgrade. my friend would like to know if he can mount the image using alcohol 120% and then just install it from there? is that even remotely possible? wouldnt windows ask for the cd/dvd once you restart?

could one mount a vista image and just do an upgrade from XP?

thanks for your input!

Nope, even during an upgrade the media needs to be present from outside of XP.

You'll have to spend a DVD on it

The behavior is about the same as it is with XP, you can choose to format if you want.
