Installing XP MCE

I just got back from the store with a new copy of MCE, but looking at the stickers on the package, it speaks of checking on oem.microsoft.com/mceready about seeing what hardware, drivers and software are required to make it work properly. I went to that link, and it wanted me to enroll in some kind of partners program, but it appeared to be more for regular businesses, than for a simple builder like me. Before I open the envelope, where it can't be returned, if necessary, is there anything that I would need to make this OS work, that I wouldn't expect with regular x32 or x64 OSs?

I intend to multiboot it with my current x64 and SuSe 10.0 systems. When I install, I expect that it will see x64 and add it to the boot.ini, but it will also wipe out the Grub boot loader that SuSe installed. I was thinking of just reinstalling SuSe afterward, but is there an easier way to cause all three to boot from Grub?

Are all the components in your PC compatible with XP32bit? probably, so MCE will likely work.
Only thing is youll need MCE drivers for any video cards or tv cards installed..

Yes, I have no problems with the hardware in x32. I'm downloading the Nvidia driver now. I checked the PVR150 box, and it's supposed to be compatable with MCE, so I assume that the driver and software on their disk will work. If that's all that there is, I guess I'm good to go.

Just when I thought that I had it all figured out, another question arose. I asked this in another thread, in a more general fashion, but when reading a response to another person's thread, that MCE comes on two disks, I started looking at my package. There was nothing to indicate this, one way or another. So I went back to pricewatch.com, and started checking their specs. Here are the MS part numbers given from various venders:

M93-00105
M93-00091(S)
m93-00091
M93-00294
M93-00200

The specs given for all of these were identical, except for the third, which said (pack of 3). The price was so close to the others, that it was obvious that there couldn't be 3 full installations, so I got to wondering if that meant that it was a 3 disk install? A question that I hope to get an answer to...before opening the package.

Yes, I finally opened the package, since it appeared to be okay. it does haver 3CDs and the third is as you said. I'm still curious about the other version numbers though.

I've read that some versions of MCE 2005 came with only a single CD. The "original" version had two CDs. One was XP Professional and the second were the MCE modifications to XP Professional.

the version of XP MCE 2005 that I just installed on my daughter's Shuttle XPC this weekend was the 2 disc version.

I had to download the drivers from the Haupaugge website for my PVR150 tuner.

Probably the ONE thing you will need is a DVD codec. Microsoft does NOT supply one. You will need to install a third party player like PowerDVD to get the codec. At least in my experience.

My Dell OEM MCE came on 1 DVD.
