Installing Wireless Router with Charter Comm. Cable?? Need Help!!!

If anyone could help me, it's be great!!
here it goes:

I live in Glendale Area, California, our cable provider is called Charter Communications. One of my friends has the charter cable internet service, and i installed dell wireless router with no problems. Now i went to another person's house, he has the exact same service, but the only difference is the modem. The one i installed was with Motorola Surfboard modem, and this one i forgot the type but i'm sure it's not one of our famous brands. I'm at their house, trying to install Linksys Wireless 4-port router (BEFW11S4), and i just can't do it. I tested the router with my dsl, and router has no problem. I tried basically everything, I tried restarting the cable modem, static ip (tried typing in the ip address with gateway), dynamic (also tried MAC address cloning, which doesn't work), and i even tried putting domain names and still it doesn't work. I really need help with this, does anyone have any idea???
