Installing winXP w/ NTFS & converting FAT32 data to NTFS

hi

currently I have win98se & win 2000 installed on my machine. It's a dual boot system on a 40Gb WD HD NOT partitioned (so the file system is FAT32...). I want to make a clean install of WINXP Pro (no upgrading) using NTFS but I have about 10Gb of data I want to keep. Yes, I know I could burn over 15 CD's or a DVD (this is not an option, unfortunately....) but I wanted to know how can I make a clean install of winXP Pro using NTFS and, at the same time, convert 10GB of data on the same HD to NTFS.
If I simply install WinXP on the HD will it automatically convert the HD to NTFS keeping the data, or will it install winXP in FAT32 keeping the data (in this case can I convert to NTFS after winxp is installed? Is it SAFE? )?

And by the way, to make a clean install keeping that data, can I simply delete 'WinNT' & 'windows' folders (using a boot disk of course) and then install winxp from the CD? Or does winxp install allow us to make a clean install without formatting?

Thank you very much for any help on this.

Just do an install and have it leave the file system unchanged. After XP is installed and everything is working as it should, you can convert it to NTFS.
