Installing WinXP on a Win98 system?

Heya, I'm looking to install WinXP on my Win98 system. I'm not interested in doing an "upgrade" install since I like having a computer that actually works, but I was wondering that if I choose to do a clean install, will it automatically remove Win98 or do I need to deltree c:/windows before installing WinXP?

Why don't you back up and just fdisk/format

Because it's going to be a giant hassle backing everything up with my lovely Creative CDRW being completely out of whack. I'd like to avoid a format if at all possible.
