Installing WinXP on a WD 160GB HDD??

I just got a Western Digital 160GB HDD and want to install Windows XP Pro. I have the original version of XP, and have heard that there is a limit of about 130GB without SP1. My question is, how do I do the initial installation of Windows? Will it recognise the first 130GB then after SP1 is installed with the rest of the drive appear and will it be formatted?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure, but why don't you just slipstream SP1a into your Windows XP disc?

I did it to mine. Then you'll be able to install XP Pro with SP1a already installed 🙂

Whoever told you that is misinformed.

When I bought my WD 200GB HDD, I was also given the Promise TX100 IDE CARD. The driver that came with the Promise card told Windows XP how to handle drives larger than 130GB. Get the card, or check for a BIOS update for your Motherboard. DO NOT LOAD WINDOWS XP WITHOUT USING A CARD OR ONBOARD IDE THAN CANNOT HANDLE DRIVES LARGER THAN 130GB, over time the HDD will be rendered useless.

Hoped I helped.

Thanks for the replies.

I found a good page on the Seagate site that explained everything.http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/faq/137_winxp.html.

The motherboard (MSI K7T Pro 2-A) was fine. I updated the BIOS previously and it recognised the whole thing. I installed Windows XP on the first 128GB, then installed SP1, which then allowed the rest of the space to be available. Formatted it as a secondary partition. Not exactly how I wanted it, but I don't mind the two partitions. I guess I should get Partition Magic if I want to adjust the size of the partitions now.... Is there a freeware program that does this??

Cheers

I have a Samsung SpinPoint 160 Gig drive. I had to download thier Disk Manager utility and partition it with it so it would recognize it as a 160 Gig rather than a 130 Gig.
