Doesnt windows install from the I386 folder on the cd's? Dell didnt give me a windows cd, but they have the i386 saved to my hd. Couldnt i just burn that to a bootable dvd and run the install?

Doesn't Dell have a number you can call with install questions? Someone will respond here at some point, but in the meantime I would try calling Dell while you're waiting.

Good luck.

I've never used those reinstall partitions. I have a copy of XP Home oem that I got for a computer I built myself and do all of my reinstalls with that using the key that's on the machine I'm working with.

yep, sure do

I had this same problem on my HP nw8440 laptop that i got from my school.
My school put their own image on the HD & they did away with the "diskless retore" feature that normally had a partition on the HD.

I wanted to hose my school's image & install XP on my own. So i downloaded a OEM XP Pro cd, installed using my CD key that came with my laptop & all is well 🙂

no, because that cd won't be bootable

look for a hidden restore partition

You can burn it to a dvd and make it bootable. Just wondering if it possible without the "offical oem dvd"
