Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows XP on a HP Elitebook 840 G2 and I'm having some problems because the laptop does not support legacy ATA mode, but only AHCI and RAID modes.

I know Windows XP doesn't have AHCI drivers but I also know I'm able to create a modified XP installation CD using nLite that integrates the AHCI drivers into the installation CD. However, I browsed the HP website for the storage drivers, and could not find any support at all for Windows XP. Support ends at Windows 7.

In this case, is there any way I can get a working Windows XP installed on the laptop?

Thanks!

My theory is that laptops used to be cool. Around 2007 they were still OK but not really that cool. Around 2012-2013 their coolness factor pretty much died. I'm trying to pinpoint the best years exactly (1993-2004ish probably) but it's roughly like that. So it's either keep buying old laptops which were cool and also work natively with classic OSes, or I can walk away from computers completely and find a better hobby. All this UEFI, AHCI, etc. bologna killed any potential interest for HP Elitebook 840 G2 and their kind. I would smash these laptops into brick walls then throw the broken pieces in the dumpster. Long live Windows XP!

Does anyone else know how I can install XP onto the laptop please?

Thanks.

Honest to goodness I don't think it can be done. That system was released after all support for Windows XP was retired. So a WinXP driver set was never released for it.

You can try some of Intel's old AHCI drivers, however they probably will not recognize the newer system. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18668/AHCI-F6-Floppy-Disk-Utility-for-AHCI Or maybe this driver set for a Jetway Intel 8 series mobo: http://www.jetwaytw.com/driver/intel8_floppy32.zip

Your best bet at this point may be throwing WinXP inside of a virtual machine.

Yikes. That's bad news. So, intel doesn't provide any XP drivers for their recent chipsets?

What you need to do is visit this page and call it a day. :D

What is it you need XP for? I'm assuming it's probably for some legacy software or hardware. I'll bet you could probably find a cheap (maybe even free) used computer with XP already on it that would do the job without the headaches.

XP is DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD. It has no support and is a mongrel in 2015. Just let it die already.

I run Windows 7 Starter on an old Acer TravelMate 280 lapy.
It's cool. It has Floppy, PCMCIA, CD/DVD and USB.

If you need XP, put it on a virtual machine. I still have a couple XP VMs. Trying to get XP to run straight off that laptop would be next to impossible (considering there is a chance you can do it).

As ViRGE pointed out, there will never be XP drivers for that chipset, so even if you could somehow get it to run on MS default drivers, the performance would be terrible, and several pieces of hardware may not work at all.

If the OP would be so kind to explain what the need to put XP on the Laptop in question a reasonable solution can be found.
