Installing Windows on SATA vs IDE

Hi all,
I have an MSI Neo2 Plat mobo running a new AMD64 chip. I am currently running my OS ( winxp PRO) on my old 40 GIG IDE drive that had windowsXP installed from my prior computer. I upgraded to the above mentioned mobo and CPU and never bothered to re-install Windows. Somehow I got lucky and with uninstalling some drivers and installing all the new ones everything worked. Anyhow I noticed that since I have not formated my drive sine WinXP pro came out (OMG that's a long time) and I also bought a new Raptor SATA drive... I want to install a fresh copy of XP and on the new Raptor. My problem is that I am not sure how to tell the system to LOOK for the SATA Raptor ahead of the IDE 40 GiG i have. Should I unplug my 40 GIG IDE for the installation? is there a setting I must set in the BIOS that allows the MOBO to know which drive to use first? I know for ever there was the option to boot from what device but I am almos certain I did not see SATA there. If I unplug my IDE drive and manage to install WinXp on my SATA Raptor and then plug back in my IDE drive.. will it take over and boot from that instead?

Also I am a bit worried of my original version of XPPro with no serive pack1 or 2 to be able to even recongize my SATA controller. I am assuming that during the installation I will have to hit the F6 and pop in the SATA driver that came with my mobo. Hope that works.. thanks for all the help

Bob

Before you begin, you should slipstream SP2 onto your XP CD. This will ensure that your operating system is safe to connect to the internet when it first comes up.

On to your question ...

1. Disconnect your IDE drive prior to installation. This will ensure that your SATA drive is assigned C: as its drive letter. Once Windows is up and running, plug the IDE drive back in.
2. In your BIOS, set your boot order to 1. CD-ROM, 2. SCSI (or SATA). Many BIOSes label their SATA controllers as "SCSI."
3. Boot from your XP CD-ROM, and make sure you have a floppy disk with your SATA drivers handy. Press F6 when prompted and load the SATA drivers from the floppy.
4. After the first reboot, go back into your BIOS and rearrange the boot order so that SCSI/SATA is listed before CD-ROM. Continue booting and the setup process should be fine from then on.

It is also possible to slipstream the SATA drivers onto the CD as well. I have attempted this however and have not yet succeded without errors of some kind. However, I just wanted to let you know as a suggestion.

Good luck!
