Installing Windows 98 on a newer machine...

This lady I have done some repair work for has a 4 or 5 old machine running Windows 98se. She has hundreds of games for windows 95/98 and doesn't want to part with the old version of windows or her games. The only problem is all these old computer have issues. I don't know '98 well enough. I don't really have much to work with. And most of them are having hardware problems as well. I've convinced her to let me build her a new machine. But that is contingent on being able to run all her games and stuff on it. I'm reading a few things that say it has to be doing using Virtual Machine or similar. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated. Also, this machine would be running windows 7.

You can certainly install Windows 98 in various virtualization software. You'll likely be running on the equivalent of a 1995-era video card and a Soundblaster 16 audio card.

One problem often encountered with running old games on modern hardware is that various timing loops don't work. Things run too fast, sound misbehaves, etc.

For a few dollars in used parts just fix the current old machine or even replace it with a good better vintage WIN98SE/ME used one (you could probably buy a whole one for $50-$60). That will be a dedicated game machine. Then go ahead & provide a current machine for normal use. I think we're at the point where doing anything other is going to be more problem & complexity than anyone is willing to put up with.

yeah. Maybe be right there C1. And with her having 5 or so, I may be able to combine all the best parts to make 1 good one. I also have a few drives and other old stuff myself.

Security is a huge issue with Windows 9x, especially if she intends to connect her PCs to the internet. There are a number of virtualization options in Windows 7 that could help - Compatibility Mode, DOSBox (open source DOS emulator) and even full-blown VirtualPC or VMWare if needed.

Yeah. Also forgot about DOS. This could be a lot of word as far as building, setting up, etc. We'll see how this goes. Thanks guys.
