Question Installing Windows 7 Firewall as a service that was never installed when O/S complied

Windows Firewall was never installed (by design since I have NEVER used it inn20 or so years and had it disabled) and I need to install it w/o re-installing the O/S.

Everything I have read about re-installing doesn't work since I believe those procedures go under the assumption it was originally there in the 1st place;

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...-service/d5bf7d36-cca6-4767-9e67-0e2a1bb28042

https://superuser.com/questions/385...rewall-after-some-malware-deleted-its-service

Is the "service' available as a download, or does someone have a working solution?

(Please no comments on removing the service in the 1st place. Had I know that prevents file/folder sharing I wouldn't of).

The following didn't work;

"All those commands should be launched in an elevated command prompt.

Step 1: Recreate the service

Rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

Step 2: Start the service

sc start mpssvc

Step 3: Reset the firewall configurations

netsh advfirewall reset netsh advfirewall set domainprofile state on netsh advfirewall set privateprofile state on

Step 4: Reboot

Reboot Windows."

It is built into windows.

You can also enable the service through Administrative Tools - Component Services.

Not when it's removed when Windows was compiled by one of the "Lite" programs as I stated. One can't enable something that isn't there.
FFS, use Genuine Windows (tm) in a business setting. I don't even want to know how much malware is crawling around on that system from SMBv1 exploits due to no active firewall.

Or just actually PAY for a 3rd-party firewall.

You are missing the point. I could care less about any firewall, but file sharing does. I can't share any drives or folders withpout it. It can even be disabled, it apparently has to be there which I wasn't aware of or I wouldn't of removed it.

Gross exaggeration !
The only "damage" s you put it is the lack of file sharing. If M$ would stop adding redacted to every new O/S, we wouldn't need "Lite" programs like this for users that don't need or want all of their crap!!!!:mad::mad:

Profanity isn't allowed in the tech sub-forums.

Download Win7 iso file and use 7zip to extract all the files to the disk. Run setup.exe and reinstall windows 7.

Those Lite programs remove a lot of files, not only that, if files are removed, when you are installing Win7, there are many registry changes/mods are not made,

The only way to fix your problem is a full reinstallation inside Windows . Windows 7 will ask if you want to keep your personal files.

I'm not sure why you're getting annoyed at me or MS, or how you think this is going to help you get your problem fixed. I'm not sure what word you would use when you've changed something in such a way that you then can't change it back when you need to, but I believe I used the correct word.

The other suggestion I would make is that if you're desperate to shall we say streamline Windows, then you need to know how to do it manually and therefore you know how to undo it if necessary. I don't need Windows filesharing services on my computer, so I switch it off. Same goes for Windows Firewall if I felt that way about it. I've also engaged in many more destructive means of getting what I want out of Windows, but I bear in mind that the consequences of my actions are more likely to be more significant, rather than yelling at clouds about it.

Like @mxnerd and @Shmee point out, you can do an in-place repair upgrade of Win7 with a Win7 ISO burned to a flash drive or DVD. Simply run the setup.exe program from the Windows installation media within Windows, and do an in-place repair upgrade selecting the option to retain all your files.

Since you tinkered with the prior install media, though, I'd do a full system backup first as there will be an increased likelihood something catastrophic could go wrong over a regular repair install at the point where it copies your applications and data over to the new install.

The only real restriction for this method is that you have to use an installation media that is the same Win7 version and also which has the same service pack integrated as your Windows install (i.e. if your Win7 install is Win7 Pro SP1, you'll need a Win7 Pro SP1 install media to do the fix). To minimize problems, you also might want to make sure if possible that the install media matches your key (i.e. if you use an OEM key with a Retail installation media, you might end up having to do a Windows reactivation via telephone since the key and media do not match and MS's online activation sometimes doesn't play well with this).

Your only other option is to back up all your personal files, re-install another tinkered version of Windows that contains the firewall, reinstall all your programs, and restore your data. A lot of work for a dead OS.

Kind of like someone the gets a car, removes the seat-belts, because they "add weight", and then can't get an inspection sticker. Or can't do Uber with their car.

You never stated that in your post. You just claimed you didn't install it which isn't really possible normally, so we thought there was some kind of windows glitch.

People who mess with the inner workings of windows often cause damage that shows up in different ways. A firewall isn't crap. It is a very helpful tool.

and due to the amount of attitude you are expressing here, this will be my last post in this thread. Good luck.

an in place re-install is fairly easy.

an upgrade like from home to pro is not.
Yeah I was referring to what is a basically a repair install, keeping programs and files the same, but fixing Windows issues. Switching versions seems irrelevant here, that is not what I was getting at.

I wasn't sure if it was possible with 7, but apparently it is I am hearing. Anyway, it may be best to do a reinstall at this point though.
