Get Partition Magic - it'll make your task much easier.

Win98 is going to have to be on a partition before Win2k, and the new partition will have to be less than 8 gigs. My guess is that your Win2k is more than 8 gigs which is why you can't install Win98.

Be careful doing this! Your master boot record is in the front of your hard drive, and if you're not sure of what you're doing, you'll erase it and find you can't bootup because your MBR has been deleted.

BTW, since you're creating a second primary partition, both will be listed as C drives. Only one can be active at a time (the one you're booting up with) while the other will be listed as "hidden."

I strongly urge you to get Partition Magic and let the program do this for you.

when you run the Win98 setup after booting with a bootdisk, type: setup /ntldr

win98 will not overwrite the MBR

then when win98 setup finishes and you're back in win2k, you can edit your boot.ini file to add the Win98 partition to your bootloader.

If you format a floppy using w2k it looks for ntldr, the winnt boot loader, rather than io.sys, the DOS (win9x) boot loader. If you want to make a DOS boot floppy, don't format it using NT.

copy ntldr from the I386 folder, on the win2000 cd, to a floppy disk. boot with a win 98 startup disk and and type this

a:\copy ntldr c:\ntldr
Be advised the next thing you are going to have to do is make a Boot.ini file

Hi
WIN 98 do not recognize the W2K startup files. So it seems that you are not booting using your floppy drive, istead the boot partition itself booting and asking for WIN2K boot file (ntldr). It happens when the partition is NTFS. So first you need to repartitioning and reformatting you HDD using Partiton Magic in DOS mode. Whether you have Boot disk of the PM or not? It is better for ease to install WIN98 first and than WIN2K

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made a specific thread concerning this issue and using "setup /ntldr" no less than a month ago.

"setup /ntldr" is supposed to keep everything in place. Dealing with partitions and NTFS is a separate issue.

At least someone was listening.
