Installing Win2K on top of itself.... do-able?

There seems to be no other way to make DX8 die and my games come back than to reinstall win2k. So here's a question. Can I just install on top of it and it'll overright the stricktly windows stuff? Normally i'd avoid this because of all the little dll and registry type things that would kill you, but i've only had this install of win2k for about 4 days, so I can't be that far off standard.

if you re-install win2k over itself, i believe you will keep dx8 as well.

just backup your data files (email, icq contact list, favorites, etc) and format and do a clean install.

What is DX8 doing to your system? I had a DX problem but I found that if I upgraded the Video drivers everything came back. I was running a Elsa Gloria II that didn't like the 6.31 driver and DX8 I had to go to the 7.17 driver on 3dchipset.com

Well I did it. It wiped DX8 and brought me back to 7.

Panth: I was getting a hard lock the moment I loaded games. I tried 6.31 and 6.47's. My probmlem is probably that the higher end divers and directx's and the like are starting to abandon TNT2's.

BB- That is why I suggested the 7.17 drvrs. I am running a TNT2U that I have the same problem with (not a lot of support any more) To my surprise I saw that the 7.17 supports it still. Also nVidia's 7 series driver is designed to enable the DX8 in games.
