installing win2k drivers in xp

I'm trying to figure out which driver for my hardware is for win2k and which one is for win98. I don't trust windowsXP to detect the right drivers, don't ask me why😉 Ive never used win2k, so my first question is what is the file extension for virtual device drivers in win2k? I know win98 uses .vxd, does win2k use the same extension or......?

Would it be pretty safe to let xp search for the drivers? The hardware only has win2k and win98 drivers i think, it wouldnt grab the win98 drivers would it? Would it be safe to assume xp would grab the win2k drivers? TIA.
The reason i want to know is because xp drivers arent available.

What type of hardware is it?

I assume winXP doesn't natively have drivers for it?

You're best bet would be to try to force it to use the win2k drivers....win98 drivers are for a completely different architecture...and shouldn't really ever work on XP

it's a modem. Im positive the modem doesnt have xp native support, i visited the microsoft website and searched for u.s.r. modem support in xp, my specific brand was not available🙁

So does win2k use the same file extension for for drivers as win98(.vxd)?

ummm....win2k DOES use some .vxd files...but i *think* most of it's drivers are .drv files

there's a lot of modems that wont' work with XP unfortunately, but trying to force win2k drivers *might* work

what's the exact modem model #?

their are two .vxd drivers to choose from. would one be for win98 and one for win2k? if so, how do i tell which one works for which os? i dont want to do any trial be error stuff if possible🙂

well...go into device manager, and choose "update driver" for the modem...then point it to the directories where you have your drivers..and see if it finds one it will accept.

if my post above doesn't work, i DID find a USR driver for that modem that *might* work with winXP....i downloaded it from driverguide.com (which i have a login for cause i'm a member)

it's about 500K, and if the above doesn't work, PM me and i can send it to you and you can give it a try

okay, thx for the help. I'll post back here with a success story hopefully🙂 i still have to pop the modem in the system, so it might take awhile.

I sent you a pm, the drivers that were provided didnt work. Invalid data error🙁 I could really use that driver you speak of🙂

I sent you another PM.......downloading it to my C drive or floppy drive results in an error🙁 Do you happen to have the file unzipped?
