I have a Lenovo T510 laptop that I just put a new SSD in (Crucial MX300, 525 GB).

Simple, after replacing the old drive with the new SSD it's time to install a clean version of Windows cause there's nothing on the old drive I wanted. Having installed Windows a million times, from 3.1 on up to 10, I figured I'd throw my Win10 disc in it, boot from it, and be on my way.

It ain't happening.

The laptop is booting from the DVD drive with the Windows 10 disc in it, and I see the blue Windows icon, but after a minute or so the laptop just restarts and this process keeps repeating.

Ugh. So I thought maybe I would need a Recovery disc (for whatever reason). I made one using the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool on my Win10 desktop, using a DVD-R because the only USB thumb drives I have aren't big enough, and booting from this also gives me the blue Windows icon and after awhile the laptop restarts and the loop starts over.

If I eject the disc (either Windows 10 or Recovery) after the first restart, I just get a "Cannot boot from any device" message and the laptop lists the drives/boot options with the Crucial SSD saying "No valid operating system" after it.

What the hell is going on here? Do I need to hook this new SSD up to my desktop and copy some files to it or something? What a pain in the ass for such a simple thing (I thought).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also have the T510, and it was an interesting experience getting Win 10 installed. After a lot of research, I discovered it was a MS install bug that said Win 10 could not be installed on this machine. I found the solution. I disconnected the T510 from the Internet completely (unplugged the Cat5 cable.) I then used the downloaded Win10 on a disk, and since it could not interact with MS online, it installed perfectly. Once done, no more problems with the Internet connected. Updates, etc., were all normal, and it is currently running build 1607. Give that a try.

How old is this laptop? Is it overheating?

Ah maybe came out in 2010? I'm lookin at the copyright on Lenovo's product details page. Just a guess; it's not a new laptop but I do not think it is overheating.

corkyg, that's a great idea about disconnecting the Internet. I figured it was some "gotcha" thing but I did not think of that. I'll try it and report back; thanks a lot man.

LOL. Well it turned out my problem was the opposite of yours; I needed to plug it into the Internet.

I didn't realize it when reading your post at first, but I did not have the laptop plugged into the Internet when I was trying it last night. The WiFi light was on, but it wasn't plugged in via Ethernet cable. I never even thought about it because I have a retail Windows 10 disc so I figured it would just install from there.

But tonight when I realized it hadn't been plugged in, I got kinda bummed after reading your reply but decided to plug it in and try anyway, not really thinking anything would be different. After the blue Windows logo was on the screen for a bit, the full screen blue background came up and the Windows 10 install started and it's at 10% "Getting files ready for installation" now. WOOOO! Man I'm so happy! I got a RAM upgrade coming tomorrow so the laptop should be half decent then.

Thanks a bunch for your help guys!

Windows 10 installed fine but for some reason it's now deciding to not connect to my Wi-Fi (which it has done without issue in the past and my phone uses it daily, Kindle Fire HD and Samsung TV have no issue; nothing about the Wi-Fi has changed since I set it up). It actually seems to have trouble even detecting the SSID because it takes several minutes for it to come up. I hit "Connect" on it when it does, and without even asking me for the password (WPA2 security) it says "Can't connect to this network" after "Checking network requirements." It does recognize the SSID as secured.

Jeez, wtf is this crap? LOL.

Well I went to "Manage known networks" and was able to forget the network, and when reconnecting I typed in the password but still same "Can't connect to this network." Bah... bedtime.

F this... I'm gonna return the SSD. Yesterday when I went to power the laptop on to continue installing software on it (Windows 10 was about all that was installed), I got the blue Windows icon and (sometimes) a "Preparing automatic repair," the laptop would restart, and this would continue over and over. Eventually it would also show a light blue screen with a sad face and the error code was, I believe, "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE."

I sighed, perhaps cussed, and reinstalled Windows 10 (with no issue).

Now tonight: same f'ing thing is happening. I can get Windows 10 to install fine but it seems like whenever the laptop is powered down, it just won't boot Windows. I really don't think it's anything besides the new Crucial SSD (I have a Crucial in my desktop system and it's great) because this hasn't happened in the past. I guess I'm gonna return it to Amazon and try another SSD but I don't have high hopes considering how this fker has acted.

Sounds like an SSD with a faulty controller. I think a swap is in order.

ThinkPad you have is older, but still a fine machine.

Yeah I initiated the return; just gotta get to a UPS this week sometime to send it out.

And as far as I can tell, the laptop is now basically bricked. I put the old SATA HDD back in it, and was just gonna reinstall Windows 10 on it (it wouldn't boot anyway; it would say "Accessing automatic repair" or whatever when trying to boot to it) but when I put in either my Win10 Pro disc, or the recovery disc I made on my desktop, I just get that blue Windows icon for about 20 seconds or so while its reading from the disc, and then the laptop restarts. I've tried plugging Ethernet in, using two different cables, to no avail. Took out the HDD and re-inserted it, no dice. I think I'm done fucking with it... I just don't get what the hell happened. It's really got me stumped.
