Installing WiMax in Lenovo x120e

Hey guys, when I was reading about the new Lenovo x120e, I was excited that they mentioned having a WiMax option for these new net/not/note books. Well, turns out that was for different models in the thinkpad lineup. I want me some built-in WiMax goodness though, so I'm here for a wee bit of help. Intel 5350s can be had for around $80, which is fine by me, but it looks like two issues could pop-up during installation:

1) USB Link may be absent on connector pin out for PCIe slot. I doubt this is the case, it's a brand new laptop. Anyone know?

2) Looks like I could get boot blocked, as the FCC frowns upon self installs of these without their seal of approval. Anyone know if I'll encounter a BIOS whitelist boot block on this thing?

Also, I'm not really sure of the best route to go for the card. I know this is an ultraportable, but I would imagine there is room for a 5350. Does anyone have a x120e that's willing to check? Do I need a 6350? Basically, half PCI-E or PCI-E? Can't really see any advantage to getting a 6350 unless I need it, but brackets do exist for half PCI-E to PCI-E, so if I'm missing some great advantage between the 5350 to the 6350 let me know.

If it isn't obvious, I'm just a DIYer who can use Google to figure stuff out. So if this is going to involve soldering a resistor onto a brand new board to overcome the USB Link thing or something I'm out. If you do know the answers to questions one and two though, and also have a WiMax connection you'd like built into your x120e, then I'll make an excellent guinea pig.

Hopefully you guys can advise me... I'm liable to just give this a go and see what happens otherwise, and that may not end well.

Okay, I called Lenovo for the whitelist, and here's what I learned... Lenovo has good tech support. I also discovered that they don't have access to the whitelist yet, the guy said I could check back in a couple of weeks. I know that pretty much everything in the predecessor, the x100e, except the stock card was not allowed. Why do they do crap like that? Anywho, that basically means I'll have to wait on a forum expert to answer that question.

Yep, I've read of a few initial orders that have a delivery date of March 3rd. Guess I figured someone on these forums may already have their hands on one, or actually work for Lenovo. That's overly hopeful thinking... guess I'm an optimist. I've been doing some more reading, and it looks like people found a way around this issue, but the workaround hasn't been updated since 2007.

Thanks for actually responding to my question. Regardless, I'll be sure to post back on how everything turns out.

Ohh... one more thing. Screw you Lenovo/Microsoft for removing the Other OS option when ordering. I already own two licenses of Windows 7, and I'm more than a little upset about being forced to buy yet another license. Microsoft, bring back Non-use by end user in the EULA so you don't screw over customers. What a bunch of *#&holes.

Alrighty, my X120e is due in tomorrow. I'll be installing a X25-M 120GB drive, 8GB of RAM, and then looking to see what I can do about WiMax. Anybody know what this is all about?

Coreboot, sounds like AMD may be making it easier to overcome a Lenovo BIOS whitelist, but that's outside the realm of my abilities to really comment on. Any experts want to chime in?

I found another soul out there attempting the same thing on Slickdeals... if you're wanting to do the same thing, keep me posted. Thanks guys.

I got my Lenovo x120e on 3/4 - E-350, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Bluetooth, Broadcom a/b/g/n wireless, Gobi 2000 GPS/WWAN

I installed 8GB of RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...L240GB-DX.aspx) and a 240GB SSD (http://www.mushkin.com/Digital-Storage/SSDs/MKNSSDCL240GB-DX.aspx) - It runs beautifully.

I tried the Lenovo-branded Intel 5100 a/g/n card from my x100e and it wasn't on the BIOS whitelist. I'm currently waiting on a Lenovo-branded Intel 6250 a/b/g/n WIMAX card to test that out. (Part #60Y3195 - you can find them on e-bay for around $70-100) Update: The 60Y3195 is not whitelisted in the BIOS causing the dreaded 1802 error. Not sure what to do now, guess I'll sit on it for now.

It's a pretty sweet system, everything I hoped my x100e would be. I'm just going to keep my x100e to run Linux...
