i am installing a vga silcencer on my 9800 pro and i decided to remove the shim. everything was going so well until i added too much force and the razor went thru the shim and chopped off a resistor i believe.

it removed one of the grey things (resistors) surrounding the core.

i was really sure that something bad woiuld happen. i continue to install the vga silencer and plug the card back in to the computer. i booted up and all went well. atm, i have started up to desktop and shut it down right afterwards. i didnt want to continue because i did not the know the danger that is involved when one resisitor is missing!

can someone please tell me what may stop working? or if it is possible to repair the resistor? is it ok to continue like nothing ever happened? please help. Many Thanks

Sorry I don't have any answers for you, but why on earth did you decide to remove the shim? You might as well try to get that thing going, you aren't gonna make it any more FUBAR than it already is.

Exactly, play with it til it dies!

Very generally speaking, it might cause a short circuit, since resistors prevent exactly that. Um....yeah ;)

Very generally speaking, no. In fact, if anything, you've created an *open* circuit by removing a component from the board, not a short.

If it works at *all*, you've probably just knocked off part of the power regulation. It can be fixed, though. If you have the resistor, take it and the card to an electronics repair shop; they should be able to locate an adequate replacement part and do the surface mount soldering to repair it. If you don't have the resistor, ask someone with the exact same card to tell you what the resistance value on it is (usually indicated by the colors printed on it).

I think that is a picture from a website guide to installing a vga silencer. The OP probably just used that pic instead of taking a pic of his/her core. The pic of the r300 core seems to have all the resistors intact.

ty guys alot for the response. but i couldnt find the resistor. so i called up newegg customer service and told themwhat iw as trying to do and they said to send it back and they'll see what they can do. i thought this was really wierd because i thought that i would actually void my warranty if i even removed the heatsink at all. so they gave me an rma number. thanks alot for the helpful responses. Manythanks.

Wow... NewEgg rocks, but they are even bailing you out for something they didn't do?

That's is just awesome! :D

You owe them a beer if they fix it.
