"Installing Update 1 of 1" on shutdown???????

Two of my friends running Win XP Pro just yesterday had same problem. They go to shut down their PC and they get the normal light blue shutting down screen, but it alternates text between "Installing Update 1 of 1" and "Please do not unplug or shutdown your computer."

The biggest problem is that neither one of them have DLd any kind of update from Microsoft. Both are set to 'Notify me of updates".

One is running service pack 2, the other is not. One has Norton Internet Security, AV and SW, the other the same and a host of others like ZoneAlarm and such. One is DSL, one dialup.

One PC spent 16 hours or so doing "Installing Update 1 of 1" with no visible progress. He reset and it SEEMS fine. The other keeps doing the installing bit on shutdown after every reset - and it is a modern, fast PC. He LIKES fast pcs.
