What are the consequences of installing an unsupported cpu (not on the list of compatible cpus)? My z68 mb officially supports the Sandy 1230 v1 but not the Ivy 1230 v2.

the consequences will never be the same
Check the bios update on your z68 mobo website, perhaps there is an update to support ivy bridge processors. Otherwise it probably won't even boot.

Yeah I figured as much since the voltages are different on Sandy/Ivy. Frustrating though when all the i3/5/7 Ivys are on the supported list.

Well if ivys are on supported list there;s a pretty high chance ivy xeons will be too.
