Installing Ubuntu on VMWare in 32bit Windows 7

Hi,

I wish to install Ubuntu 11 on my Windows 7 Professional 32bit as I do a fair bit of development on Linux. I currently have a separate PC running Mandriva and I wish to consolidate my development PC as well as move from the legacy Mandriva to a more modern Ubuntu distro.

I'm thinking of running Ubuntu as a virtual machine in VMWare whenever I need to. How do I create an Ubuntu VM? I tried googling but there are tons of guides for installing VMWare in Ubuntu, but not the other way around.

Also, my machine is a Sandy Bridge Core i5, but my Windows 7 is 32bit. In this case will I be able to install a 64bit Ubuntu?

Thanks.

VMWare natively handles Ubuntu. Just create a new virtual machine and point VMWare towards your Ubuntu ISO, and VMWare will walk you through the rest.

As for running a 64bit guest on a 32bit host, yes, you can do that. It requires that your processor support VT, and a quick search on Intel's ARK listed all of the desktop SNB i5s as supporting VT.

Thanks.

Are the free versions of VMWare(either Player or Server) able to create new VMs? I installed VMWare Server 2.0.2 and I can't seem to find the console in my Start menu or really anywhere...

I believe both can create VMs. You used to have to use Server if you wanted a free creation application, but they added that to Player some time back. I haven't used either in a long time. I pretty much stick to VirtualBox.

Thanks I managed to use the Web access to create a new VM, but I'm not sure how to play it. Nothing seems to happen when I power it on with the web access...
