Ok this is probably a stupid question but...will I run into any problems if I completely formant and do a fresh Ubuntu install on my Compaq Presario V6000Z. I got the laptop from a friend and I've always wanted to learn Linux/Ubuntu, so I figured I'll use it strictly as a Linux machine. I'm asking because I know sometimes it isn't recommended to completely format a laptop due to software pre-installed on there by Hp. Thanks.

Just burn off the recovery CDs or DVDs so you can restore the system to its factory state. Then you can format and install ubuntu with no worries.

From the looks of it you have a Turion, nvidia graphics, and broadcom wireless card. You might only run into problems with the wireless. You will need ndiswrapper to get it to work properly. Graphics will be fine as restricted manager will handle that and install 32bit ubuntu, dont bother with 64bit. Also if your keyboard is working kinda screwy on the boot menu of the live cd press F6 and type 'noapic' as a boot option.
