Installing the Promise PDC20378 SATA RAID controller...

So I was exploring the BIOS settings fo my motherboard and enabled the Promise 378 controller, as I just might add a third drive. I enabled it in IDE mode, not RAID.

Windows booted just fine, found the new hardware and asked for the drivers. As stated in the Readme file, I used the drivers in "D:\DRIVERS\PROMISE PDC20378\378ATA\WINXP".

Windows installed a device in the SCSI and RAID Controller category, and it shows as a "WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller".

Nothing wrong so far.

BUT, there's a 2nd device (under "Unknown Devices") called "Promise SATA Console SCSI Processor Device" that I can't seem to be able to install. I tried every folder in the CD and Windows can't find the driver for it.

What the hell is it?

thats because you havent installed the HDD yet - thats the device

but you have to be careful on which connectors you attach anything to and BIOS settings - check your manual closely before you plug anything in

there is IDE, Non RAID IDE on Promise, RAID on Promise, and SATA and SATA RAID on Intel (if your board is ICH5R - too lazy to look up)

My board has:

ICH5R South Bridge:
-2 x UltraDMA 100/66/33
-2 x Serial ATA, RAID 0,1 function
Promise 20378 RAID controller:
-1 x UltraDMA 133 support two hard drives
-2 x Serial ATA
-RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, Multiple RAID

I'll be using one of the 2 Serial ATA ports on the 378. Their labeled SATA_RAID1 and SATA_RAID2. No idea wich one to use first, I guess RAID1

From Asus User's Manual

These Serial ATA connectors support SATA hard disks that you may configure as a RAID set. Through the onboard Promise PDC20378 RAID Controller, you may create a RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, or multi RAID configuration together with the RAID ATA133 connector.

I've just added the third HDD without problems. The Promise controller detected the drive and Windows removed the yellow question mark from the unknown device.
