am trying to install my new 9700 all in wonder. The setup i have right now is a geforce 3 card. I also have this other AGP card in the agp slot. the monitor plugs into the geforce three and then there is a connector cable that runs (externally) from the geforce 3 to the agp adapter. In installing the 9700, do i remove both the geforce and the AGP card? I also have an mpeg decoder attached via cable internally to my geforce 3..do i remove that as well or can i attach it to the 9700?
thanks in advance!

Wow! This post is an advertisement for BB or CompUSA's "Let us install it for you!!!" option ;)

What mobo is this? 2 AGP slots? GF3 PCI? You sure its not a GF4 MX? Gonna need more info before I even comment on this, b/c I have no clue what kind of set-up you are currently running. I don't recall a connector on either of my GF3's, and I'm looking at my GF4 right now and don't see any connectors for an mpeg decoder. Don't remember seeing one on my Radeon 9700 either.

That just confused the hell out of me :D If at all possible, how about some pics of your PCI/AGP slots (with the cards in them) and the backside of your case.

ok..sorry about all the confusion..i think i even confused myself..I will give you my specs in a sec but the hardware mpeg decoder was an option that i purchased with my pc for better DVD performance..Its crap i know..
here we go..

P4 1800
Intel DBG850 Mobo
Promise ultra100 ide controller
nvidia gf3 nfinite fx
hardware mpeg-2 decoder
intel pro/100 desktop adapter

the pci card that i said was connected internally to my gf3 is an Ultra100Tx2 (ide controller).. what do i do with this?

Yank the GF3, yank the mpeg2 decoder, and find out why your IDE controller is connected to your GF3. There's no reason for it to be at all.

The Radeon cards have a hardware mpeg decoder onboard, so you can retire your PCI card or throw it in a 2nd rig. Plug in your AIW in your AGP slot, connect the power supply, plug in your VGA cable and tv source.

Before you do any of this, go to hardware manager and remove your GF3 from devices. Then select standard VGA. There are some issues with going from nvidia to Ati cards, so you may need a fresh install, but try this method first.

There's no way the 100Tx2 is connected to the Geforce3, maybe a wire is just running past it and it looks connected? What does the wire look like?

Ok, remove the agp card and put AIW Radeon instead of it and connect the external cable to AIW.

I just did an nVidia -> ATi install, and performance was total crap until I went in and cleaned out my registry. There are guides on doing this all over the net, just check google.

its not nearly as complicated
a primitive approach (hey it works)

rip out anything video related
put in 9700 into agp

before doing that, get detonator destroyer (do they still make that?) or something similar and uninstall the gf3 from device manager
