Installing SP2 doesn't allow any USB ports to work

A coworker of mine just got a brand new comptuer yesterday. It was up and running just fine with Win XP SP1. He downloaded SP2 (with my cautioned approval) to test if he would like it. SP2 installed without a problem. But whenever he reboots, the USB optical mouse has its light on until Windows opens. Then the light goes out and the mouse doesn't work.

He removed SP2 and everything worked well again. Reinstalled SP2 and the mouse fails. Any suggestions?

SP2 and USB works for me (mouse, scanner, printer, memory card reader, PDA, and camera). Does he have any other USB devices?

Have your friend go into Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager to look at status of USB ports. If they have a 'yellow bang', delete them, then restart and let XP find them as new devices.

No other devices hooked up yet (except a monitor hub, but he tried unhooking it without success). I haven't taken a look at it yet, but I'll look in the device manager later this afternoon.

USB is fine here also (SP2 for over a week now)...

Perhaps there is a mobo driver issue??? I know when I installed pre SP1 winXP on an NForce2 board, the ABIT installation utility said USB 2 drivers would be available when I updated to SP1. I went straight to SP2, but USB contoller was detected as new hardware and worked just fine after that.

One of the MS optical mice? I know there is a current beta for the driver set, one of the changes is SP2 compatibility for some cases (such as when remote desktop is disable which causes problem even for the local user)

Try this: uninstall, in Device Manager, the USB mouse listed under "Human Interface Device". (May need to boot with a PS2 mouse to do this). Then power off, remove the PS2 mouse, and re-connect the USB port mouse.

Yes, often times uninstalling and then reinstalling USB and or mouse drivers corrects any issues.

Thanks for the help. A PS2 mouse made it easy to delete and reinstall the USB and mouse drivers. That solved the problem. I wonder why there is a problem with them getting corrupted and needing reinstallation in SP2?

I installed SP2 and experienced no problems until I connected my mp3 player to upload some songs. Everytime it would freeze in the middle of a transfer. I uninstalled SP2 and it works fine now.
