I'm looking for some basic help here. I have windows xp pro running and i want to dual boot with solaris 9 x86. Reason - I want to learn solaris and be able to log into my school's network from home and use their unix software.

so, i downloaded the software from sun, burnt the cds. I have partition magic, and think i need to allocate another primary partition - but what file system would work best? any other tips for dual booting? or should i just forget sun and go for some linux distro? either would work - but i just like the solaris interface i've been using in the school labs.

thanks,
Andres

Don't allocate a partition, just resize the Windows partition down and leave some freespace, Partition Magic can't create UFS partitions (AFAIK) which is what Solaris would need.

Linux would have a lot better hardware support, have you checked the Solaris HCL against your hardware yet? A lot of the things are the same and a lot will be different, mostly system config stuff will be different. Things like Mozilla, sh, etc can (and in a lot of cases) will be exactly the same on Linux as on Solaris.

I looked through some of the HCL at sun.com and saw listings for my mobo and video card (ecs k7s5a pro and radeon 8500). so i figured that would be enough to at least install and run. though the comments were based on the 04/03 revision, and i have the latest version, 12/03. I would hope compatibility would only improve with revisions.

It would really depend on what the manufacturer has changed in the latest revision and if they bothered to send information to Sun about it.
