Installing software on an external hard drive?

Hi guys,

I'd like to install some games and other applications on an external hard drive to save space on my SSD. I'm planning to use an eSATA, 2.5", 7200 RPM hard drive which I'll carry with me.

Being eSATA, I figured it would be fast enough to install and run applications on. Is there any reason why this wouldn't work? Obviously I wouldn't be ejecting the HDD in the middle of running a program that's installed on it, and I wouldn't be installing anything that's intended to stay running all the time (like antivirus). It would primarily be games.

The main reason I'm asking is because I haven't ordered the drive yet, and I want to make sure I won't be wasting my money.

Thanks guys.

It will work as long as you run it on the machine it was registered to when you installed on the external. There are some programs which do not require registration, and they can be run from a CD, DVD, or external on most any compatible machine.

That's the plan. 🙂 I'll probably be installing my entire Steam client, games, etc. on the external drive. It'll be used strictly with that computer.
