Installing software in win2k = alarm on motherboard

I built a new coputer and am having a problem I can't figure out. It seems to be running fine, except when I try to install certain software. Only a few moments into the setup for programs, the computer shuts off and an alarm sounds on the motherboard. This happens so far for WinMX, Mcafee VirusScan 6.02 and Final Fantasy 7. Tons of other software (Photoshop 6, MS Office 97, etc) installed without incident, but these simply won't.

Some info on the hardware:
- Epox 8k5a3+
- 2 80 GB Maxtor harddrives in 3 raid 0 partitions
- All in Wonder 8500DV
- 512 MB PC2700 Corsair memory w\ silver heat spreader
- Athlon 1600XP+ (not OC'd)
- Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

all in an Antec SX835II case.

I know the motherboard has the ability to shut off if the processor hits some temperature threshhold, but I disabled that. I put the BIOS settings back to their 'safe' settings.

OS is win2k pro with SP3.

Any ideas? I am baffled and frustrated.

Edit: Also, updated largePageMinimum registry patch...

Have you modified the Services running on your computer at all?

If Windows Installer is disabled, many installations won't run correctly.

Go into Services (Running 'services.msc' does it in XP) and make sure Windows Installer is either on Automatic or Manual AND Started.

Edit: Just did a quick search and WinMX uses InstallShield, not Windows Installer. I really couldn't tell you what's causing it, but check to see if those other programs are using InstallShield too, or tell us which ones they do use.

Can't check that now as I removed the partition. I figured I would start fresh and ghosted it. Booted to install Win2k from CD and removed the partition and then created a fresh blank one. After this, another crash and some motherboard fanfare :( I don't think it was a matter of the service then.

That's where I've left it so far, had to get to homework. If it matters, there are 2 80 GB maxtors in RAID 0 with 3 partitions (10GB was NTFS, 20GB FAT32, 130 GB NTFS).

Message from event log from last crash:

The Device, \Device\Scsi\hpt3741, did not respond within the timeout period.

Any ideas on that?

mmmmm, is that a hipoint raid controller error ? i can't find anything specific to your error (betting somone will though), but since you wiped it anyway try installing a single drive and see if you have problems.
good luck

Well, I blasted everything and started over, intending to add a single hardware device at a time. But with just viedo card in, this happens.

And yes, it is a highpoint raid controller, integrated into the motherboard. Have had lots of other crashes since though, without any mention of that error. Always dies, for example, when editing files in photoshop...
