installing software errors

i have installed windows sp pro my seatage 120gb SATA hd and now when i try to install software, ie office xp, i get an error messege saying that one of the installation cabinets could not be found. although i know the files are on the cd, they are not copying to my hd. i this doesn't happen for ALL software i try to install, but it does for lots i've tried reformatting the hd but the same thing happens.
 
actually i did get some weird memory error when installing a driver. you could be on to something. where can i find Memtest?
