I put in a new hdd and set it as master and the old one as slave. My plan is to put winxp on the new hdd, transfer my files from the old hdd to the new, and then format the old hdd and use it as my storage drive. When i put the windows cd in to format/install xp on the new one, will it automatically select the new hdd since it is the master.....dont want to accidentally wipe my old one with stuff still on it

thanks

Boot up using the WinXP CD, and it will find both drives. If your new hard drive is in fact new and unformatted, just format the one that says "unformatted." You'll be fine.

Or you can play it safe and unplug the storage drive until you put xp on the new one.

Open up Control panel, and go to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, and then click on Disk Manager. You can format your secondary drive here.
