Installing Second Hard Drive

Hi,

I have a Maxtor 20GB drive..and bought a WD400 now. I am trying to install the new drive as primary slave. The jumper settings on the new disk is set to slave. But the jumpers on the maxtor disk has no markings saying if its master, slave or otherwise. With its current jumper settings maxtor is being recognized as master. But when i try to attach the WD400 alone or along with the maxtor disk, the bios does'nt see it. Morever the system is very slow in response when i connect the new hard drive. Please tell me how i can get bios to see the second drive as slave and see it in windows. Do i have to use partition magic to resolve this?

What exactly is a WD400 (Western Digital 400GB?). What motherboard are you using? What type of IDE cable are you using?
If you have an IDE cable that labels the master/slave connectors, then be sure you set the jumpers to cable select. You should also go out to Maxtor's web site and be sure you have the jumper right.
I don't know why the BIOS does not see the WD400. I would try to get the BIOS to recognize the WD400 before putting both drive on the same channel.
