I have XP PRO installed on a new mobo....I didnt load SATA drivers while installing the
OS.

MSI MCP6P M2 + and a 320 gig Seagate SATA hard drive.

XP PRO runs fine but show IDE controllers and the drivers are Microsoft from 2001.

Can I install the SATA drivers or do I need to install them while reloading XP ???

I have searched but would rather listen to you guys/girls.

Also, will the SATA drivers let the hard drive perform faster/quicker ??

TIA.

Hey corkyg.

My XP PRO install disk has no service packs on it.

I normally manually install service pack 1 to get the drivers to work.

If you are installing a fresh OS onto a SATA drive you don't have a service pack 2 disk, then every install will require you to load SATA drivers from a floppy disk when prompted during the OS installation process. You can slipstream SP2 and SP3 with your XP Pro install disk to create a new install disk. This will allow you to install the OS without having to load driviers from a floppy.

Your best bet might be to get a copy of XP Pro with SP2 and SP3 slipstreamed, and then use your key. Otherwise, you will have to install SATA drivers as described by Rascak above. XP didn't get SATA drivers until Sp2.

One more question.

I also have a GeForce 7050M-M mobo and AM 5200 with XP PRO.

I loaded XP first and later loaded the SATA drivers, XP detected them and they show up in device manager.

Will the SATA drivers work ok loading them like this ???

Thanks guys !!

There are several options, but the closest to Microsoft recommended procedure would be to slipstream your XP Install CD to at least SP2 and to integrade the appropriate AHCI drivers for your disk controller into the XP Install CD. Both of these actions can be easily done with nLite.

After the slipstreaming, you can switch your disk controller to AHCI mode and then boot to your XP Install CD and run an XP "Repair Install", which will overwrite the current XP Install, but will include the proper drivers for your AHCI disk controller.

I don't know what you mean by that. XP supports SATA controllers just fiine, as long as they are in IDE mode. If they are in AHCI mode, you must load drivers with F6 when installing XP. XP has never included AHCI drivers like Vista and Win7 (a big oversight as far as I can see, MS could have added AHCI driver support to SP3 if they had wanted to.)
