Installing SATA drive?

I just bought my first SATA drive, will be delivered today and can't wait to install it.

Anyways it?s an OEM model. My motherboard came with a SATA cable but I?m wondering if I need to make a stop at a computer store to buy an adapter to power the SATA drive.

They require a different power cable type correct? not Molex.

Does your PSU have SATA plugs on it?

Some drives support both SATA and Molex, but I think those are only older drives.

Western Digital drives offer the flexibility of connecting a molex to their drives to power them up just in case you don't have a SATA power cord, but you will need a SATA data cable to connect to your motherboard. Also, some motherboards are built differently as far as OS detection capabilities. I'd get a floppy drive ready just to keep your configuration options open.

I'm not sure if too many OEM drives ship with SATA cables to connect to your mobo?

OEM drives come bare, i.e. nothing but the drive. If your PSU does not have sata power connectors you will have to get a molex to sata adaptor. The sata cable which came with your mobo will be fine for connecting drive to mobo.

Yep, even my new 250GB SATA II 16mb cache Western Digital still gives the option of using either the SATA or Molex power connector.

I got the drive yesterday as expected. The drive did have both the Molex and SATA power ports.
After reading the manual I learned how to install the drive and change the Bios settings to make it the priority drive since i would be installing XP on it. Then made the floopy disk required to include the Nvidia SATA drivers etc etc.
I was surprise that it only took about half hour to install Windows XP cleanly.

Anyone know if i buy a second drive and want to make a RAID with them, do i have to blow the OS and restart again or i should be able to added it and make it go into RAID 1?
