hi everyone - i just got a dell e1405 with a gig of ram, am planning on getting a compaq v2000z laptop for my parents. how easy is it to install ram on each of these machines? i've built/modified hardware in my pc's, but have never messed with a laptop before. is it typically easy to do?

My experience has only been with Dell and Sony laptops, but it has been very easy. Usually there is a cover on the bottom of the laptops that you have to remove a screw or two from to get access to the memory slots. Of course, this was on older P3 machines, but I would assume the newer laptops are just as easy to upgrade the memory.

One issues though could be compatibility with the memory. I know that the Dell laptops (C-series) were very picky on what kind of memory they wanted to take.

Use the kingston memory finder tool thingamabob. It's at their website. The actual upgrading is a matter of 10 minutes, 5 if you've done it before. You probably only need 1 small phillips screwdriver too.

Also check out www.notebookforums.com There is a Dell section there that you can find alot of info for your laptop. Good knowledgable folks to help you too. Talcite is correct though. Kingston is one such favorite choice for Dell users.
