Okay. I decided it's time to upgrade my aging TNT2 card so I grabbed a Radeon 8500 at Best Buy. Proceeded to force Win2k to use the standard vga driver by following the instructions on MS's website. So far so good, I think. Try to install ATI's drivers. Driver installation fails! Says something to the effect "Try to setup your display adapter with standard VGA driver before running setup". Umm. That's what I just did, isn't it?

What am I overlooking?

I just did upgrade (from a gef256) to the 8500 on w2k

Just to check got directx 8.1 and sp2?

what I did:
0) downloaded latest driver from ati
1) shutdown sys with gef256 (did not touch graphics settings)
2) removed gef and installed 8500
3) booted and clicked cancel on new hardware install
4) ran ati driver exe

working great, hope this helps
