INSTALLING PRE-HUNG DOORS (interior)

I am replacing the crappy hollow core doors in my house with nice pine six panel PRE-HUNG doors.

I plan on re-using the trim.

I plan on staining the doors, rather than painting (trim is stained), prior to installing them.

Should I remove the door, prior to installing the frame?

Will wood screws (#8-2.5") at 3 per jamb side, 6 per hinge side, 2 per top be sufficient?

Thanks in advance

btw, i have googled the topic and the websites there focus on squaring and plumbing.

When you install the door, start from the hinge side... go ...

Top ... make sure it is level
Middle
Bottom

Do not use screws. Use 2 inch finish nail (6d?)
Once you have done the hinge side, take the door off and put in the rest of the frame.
Use wood Shims starting from the top going down... making sure the door jamb is level. The nails will go where the shims are.
Once it is fitted, and you get the frame in and are sure it is all level...replace the door.

I left the doors on when I hung mine. If you take them off, take them off from the pins, don't remove the hinges.

Cripes, KarenMarie nailed it... nailed it, heh. ;)

I'd leave the door on to hold it plumb and square, and keep the striker plate aligned. Use a pry bar to lift it off the floor about 1/4". You can put 6p finish nails in the heavy side of the molding to hold it in place while you insert the shims behind the casing. Don't drive the nail home yet, in case you need to remove it to make adjustments.

The rough opening should be about 3/4" larger than the door. That will allow you to apply shims on both sides. Use the 8p casing nails inside the casing as KarenMarie described. You can finish nailing the molding on last, using 4p nails on the thin side of the molding, which attaches to the edge of the casing. You'll have to 'set' all the nails at the end.

Hope this makes sense.
