I have some older programs (probably from about 3-4 years ago like CaseWare (an accounting program) and when I try running the setup programs it shows up in my task manager that it's running but it does nothing. Civilization II was another program that did this. Any ideas?

I'm willing to bet it is using a 16-bit installer. Windows x64 does not support 16-bit applications anymore. If it does use a 16-bit installer your best bet would be to use a program like Virtual PC or VMWare to run it inside a virtual machine.

I tried the 45 day trial of MS Virtual PC, seems it only works under 32 bit windows too. :( Any other options. VMWare doesn't seem like a viable solution either. Guess I'll just have to build a crap little computer running winxp or 98 and then use RDP to connect to it or something.

Or just use normal 32 bit Win XP pro SP2 (or SP1 if you can't stand SP2) until most of the major crap bugs are worked out and a shell app comes out for the software you have that is meant for running on either 32 or 64 bit.

Some older programs just don't work on WinXP because they don't even start up after installation, no matter how many compatibility settings you setup. They just don't run for similar reasons why we don't use ISA cards anymore.

Both progs do work in WinXP Pro (32bit), they just don't work with Win64. Caseware is version 2004, so it's actually quite new, but it's sort of a limited market program, so I presume they haven't bothered changing anything that they haven't needed to until now, so they probably have some 16bit code in their setup program or something. Civilization 2 came out probably back in 1996 or something. I just love that game. :D
