Installing NV5 Silencer on BFG 6800GT in SLI - Can this be done?

I have a DFI LanParty SLI-DR mobo with two BFG 6800gt stock cards running in sli mode. I would like to lower the temps on these cards and I have heard that the NV5 silencer is the way to go.

1st. Can I replace both my video cards stock coolers with two of the NV5 silencers and have room to do this? I have an extra expansion slot below each card right now.

2nd. How hard is this to do? Can someone please send me a linky on this and let me know how difficult?

Thanks!!!

My friend is ordering NV Silencers for his cards on the DFI Ultra-D >>>> SLI mod (Same board)

I'll tell you how it goes.

Either way, installing the Silencer is a piece of cake.

My understanding is that it will be very tight. For anyone who doesn?t have the board in front of them, you can see here just one x1 PCIe slot between the 16x PCIe slots. It dosen't give you much room to work with. The Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe uses 2 x1 PCIe slots between the 16x PCIe slots, as you can see here. The Asus board is more friendly for vid cards mods because of the extra space. Of course, the DFI OCs better so you have to choose what the most important to you.

As far as putting the NV5 on the vid card, it's a snap. Excellent directions come with the Silencer. You will need to clean off any old thermal paste (isopropyl alcohol on cotton swabs followed by a lint-free cloth is what I use) and apply new. If you want to enhance the heatsink's performance, you could use Arctic Sliver Ceramique or Arctic Sliver 5 instead of the stuff that comes with the Silencer.

I hope you can make it work. If you can succeed, you?ll quiet your system considerably and improve the thermals of your whole system. Good luck! :D

Zalman's vid card coolers are even taller than the NV5. I'm afraid that won't help.:(
