Hello, well what I want to do is to install Windows NT 4.0 Workstation on my computer along with Windows 98. I have only one hard drive, and I do not plan on buying another one. Right now I have a 6.4Gig HD running Win98 in Fat32. This is what I'd like to do:

Format my HD and then partition it into the following;
create the following drives
C:\ 300MB in FAT 16 for booting the O/S's
D:\ 4 Gig for WIN98 in FAT32
E:\ 1700MB for NTFS Workstation 4.0

Can anyone tell me if this is possible, or not? If it is or not, can you give me ay suggestions or tips so I can sucessfuly do this dual boot. I'm doing this as I want to put Workstation on to practice with, yet I wnat to keep WIN98 as my primary O/S. Thanks a lot

It's possible... kinda

First partition your harddrive. W98 only can install itself on the primary partition of your harddrive. The trouble is that NT wants to install its startup files (ntdetect.com, ntloader and boot.ini) on this drive also. This meants that this drive must be formatted in Fat16 since NT cannot read Fat32. After installing W98 you can install NT (don't forget to load smartdrv before doing so, it saves about two hours of file copying ). ;)

During setup of NT you can specify on wich partition you want to install NT. You then choose a partition other than the one you have installed W98. Setup give you the possibility to convert this drive to NTFS. You can also do this later with the command 'convert'.

So this was the Microsoft way :p

An other option is the use of a good bootmanager such as bootmagic...

These manager give you the options of having multiple primary partitions.

Wich solution you should choose kinda depends on your own experience and skills.

Good luck.

NT doesn't recognize Fat32 (unless you can get your hands on the program FAT32 4 NT)
WIN98 can't recognize NTFS.

If you save files on your NTFS partition and you boot up in win98 you might have a problem. Reboot go into nt copy files and dump to fat16 than reboot back into win98 and dump files from fat 16 back to fat32.

No! No! No!

The original post's suggestion will work just fine. Just install Win98 first. The only correction is that the FAT32 volume will NOT show up in WinNT (so you E: is really D: in WinNT). The reverse is true, with the NTFS volume will NOT show in Win98. THe same C:, but the D: this time is the FAT32 volume.

Read the sig for way too much info. :)
