I'm planning on installing my 7970 tomorrow to replace my old 4890. Do I need to run any driver removal software. Reinstall widnows? What's the general practice on doing this without borking my pc. I've never installed a video card after I put this one in like 3 years ago.

You should be fine. Uninstall the AMD Catalyst Install Manager from the Windows Control Panel. Shut the computer down and install the 7970 and the six and eight pin power connections for it. Boot back up and then download and install Catalyst 12.3 from our site or amd.com and that should be it. Utilities like driver sweeper are very handy but generally not needed unless you are already having a problem from something else changing something with the driver.

Yeah, you dont need to do anything but just uninstall the drivers like you normally would for any other hardware...

Those driver removal programs are generally used by the less experienced. Ive never seen a need to use any of that junk. Those programs have a greater chance of screwing your computer up rather than helping anything.

going AMD to AMD, you shouldn't have too much trouble. It is when you go NVidia to AMD or vice versa that you need to be pretty thorough

Hmmm...no you dont. I have multiple computers that have toggled back and forth between AMD and Nvidia many times...there are no issues ever... I dont know why some people seem to think there are conflicts between differing card types. That is completely untrue...

I bet I have changed between AMD/Nvidia cards like 6 times on a machine this past year and ive never had any problems ever just uninstalling like anything else.
