Installing new OS

I just got a new Athlon XP and motherboard, and I know im gonna have to reinstall my OS, which is WinXP right now, but I'm gonna install Win2k, but I don't want to format my hard drive, since I only have one right now. Can I just delete the directories that contain the OS itself and keep just like one backup directory, and then install win2k over it? Or will win2k format my drive itself? Is there any way to resize the partition without destroying the data that I have, because that would just be way easier too. Thanks in advance

When reinstalling a format and a fresh installation is best.

It will if you tell it to during the installation process. Once again a format and a fresh installation is best, and I would discourage anything else.

Partition Magic of something along that line will do this. Or you can copy your data to CD's, Zip, etc. then copy them back over once the installation is done. After all, by this time, you should have decided to perform a format and a fresh installation and your data would be lost during the format.

Did I mention format and fresh installation??? 😉

Oh, for God's sake please do yourself a favor and choose NTFS, unless you're dual booting.

I am going to dual boot it, win2k and mandrake 8.1, thanks for the info. I forgot about putting my data on cds, that would be the best plan for me to follow

you can reinstall without formating if you want, just install to the c:\winnt directory it will overwrite whatever is there, to resize, you can use "partition resizer" do a search for it on google. its a free utility that will resize NTFS partitions .. good luck ..

Can you dual boot Win2k and Linux if you use the NTFS filesystem for Win2k, I don't really see much of a problem in doing so, because the two will be on different partitions with different file systems anyway. Does anyone have any information on this?

ya it doesnt matter what file system you use, use lilo to boot both os's .. just do a search on dual booting 2k/linux .. all you have to do is add an "image=" line in ur lilo.conf, with the appropriate information .. if you use grub .. good luck ..

Many newer distros will add your dual boot OS to the bootloader menu on linux install. My RH7.2 machine added 2k to the GRUB menu when it installed it. Use grub... it's where the world is going.
