First the problem.

After installing a new mobo, upon windows startup I get a blue screen with the following error (don't remember exact words):

"Windows has encountered an error and has shut down to avoid damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this error, restart your computer. Otherwise take the following steps:

Remove any newly installed hard drives or controllers and make sure they are properly configured and terminated. Run checkdisk /f to check for bad sectors. Make sure the hard drive does not contain any viruses...yadda yadda...

Error number x04890284 495i3 349284-2 yadda yadda yadda..."

This is with my old 40gig Western Digital HD trying to be installed on a new Soyo Dragon PX400 platinum mobo. OS is Win Xp Home Edition.

My actions:

-Used "fail safe" config in Bios. Didn't work. Used Optimized config in Bios, didn't work. Tried "last known good configuration" and that didn't work either.

-Removed each component and tested, one by one, until all that was left was video card and HD. Still got the error.

-Reinstalled HD back to old mobo. Works fine.

-Defragged disk.

-Ran error check. Everything normal.

-Installed HD back to new mobo and tested. Nope, still won't work.

-Installed a very old Maxtor HD 20 gig on new mobo. It worked. But this HD has unneeded data and is using Win98. I want to erase this drive and use it as a slave.

-Unhooked 20gig drive hooked 40gig HD back to new mobo, still not working.

-Reinstalled 40 gig back to old motherboard. Went to Device Manager and uninstalled IDE's (Primary, Secondary and SiS PCI). Turned off comp and removed everything (including cables) except HD and Video Card. Restarted comp. Even with components taken out, windows "recognized" new hardware and reinstalled drivers for IDE's. Because of that I then went back to device manager and uninstalled the three IDE's plus the HD itself. Turned off comp and removed components. Hooked them back up to the new mobo, once again and restarted. Now, instead of windows briefly flashing at startup and THEN going to blue error screen, the screen is now shown before windows even shows up and the error screen actually stays up until I reset the comp.

FYI...all the times I got the error screen BEFORE I uninstalled the IDEs, Windows would start up for a half second then quickly flash to the blue screen for about a fourth of a second. The only way I was able to read the screen was by using a camcorder to record the process. Then by going back in the video, frame by frame, I was able to make out what the blue screen said. Anyhoo, after I uninstalled those IDE's, the blue screen error is displayed when windows is SUPPOSED to start up. And the error stays up until I rest the comp. So at least I've made a BIT of progress! haha.

My question:

What the HELL do I do now?!?!?!?!? haha
I m so baffled and frustrated I want beat the shiet of my computer a la Office Space and perhaps go chew on some tin foil. I've been trying to figure this out for the last three days. :(

Oh, I bought a brand new hard drive. I was thinking about making the new HD a slave on the old comp. Then backing up the old drive to the new so that way both drives would have Win XP. Then use the new drive as a master on the new mobo. But if the old drive (which has probs with new mobo) is backed up to new drive, then would the new drive now ALSO have the same problem?

Please, please, I hope someone can help. Someone has to know what to do! :)

Thanks for reading this novel and an even bigger thank you for any help you can give!!! :) :) :)

Take care!

P.S. I've read some replies about doing a clean install of Win XP but I don't know how I would do this. My old comp came with XP already installed and no XP CD. The comp came with two repair CDs but they don't give the option to manually install XP. The old comp is a Powerspec.

Again, I hope someon can help! :)

well basically you had an old pos premade with a restore cd, so you need to go out and get a copy of winxp if that is the os you want to use. You cant expect to drop a hardrive with xp into another completely different computer and expect it to work.

Trankuility, Turkey22 was right. If you want XP Home running with the new SOYO PX400 mobo, you've got to re-install XP Home from scratch, and of course, you also have to re-install all your apps. This is a completely new hardware and there is no way to transfer a plug-and-play OS like Windows XP from one hardware config to another. I know some people have managed to transfer the old NT 4.0 this way but don't even think about it with XP

Hmmm, I see. Well I was really hoping to avoid paying an extra $200 for XP. Argh, haha. Man oh man, this thing is costing a bundle. Anyone got an extra copy of XP they don't want? hahah ;)

I have seen XP a lot of places for under $100.00. Go up to hot deals and look over the last 2 or 3 weeks of posts I am sure you will find XP pretty cheap.

Just writing to say that this issue has finally been resolved. Also want to say thank you to everyone who posted with advice! Thank you! I always appreciate someone taking the time out to help. So again, thank you all :)

In case anyone is wondering, I borrowed a friend's version of XP and then used my key. Worked like a charm. And now the all the components are working perfectly! Yippee! All that frustration and time taken to find the problem...and that's all it was, hahah. Only thing now is get some info on my monitor but that's a different subject for a different thread. :)

Take care!

Edit** Oh, haha, my PM function is now enabled, heheh.
