Installing new faucet/drain in sink: different sized pipes?

So I'm installing a new faucet to replace the old leaky one in my old basement bathroom.

It turns out the drain included with the faucet is an 1¼" pipe, which I suppose is pretty standard now.

The problem is, my waste/sewer pipe from the wall is a " opening, as is my P-trap/J-bend.
Obviously when I place the new drain in the P-trap, it just swims in it and I can't make a watertight connection.

What's the best way to fit the smaller drain pipe into the larger P-trap/j-bend? Do I have to buy a new, thicker drain? Is there a workable adapter?

Thanks!

Its pretty common. There are trap adapters available. Any hardware store worker worth their oxygen should know what you are looking for.

After rereading your description. You likely just need a different slip fitting where to drain goes into the trap.

Yes, there are adapters. 1.25 to 1.5 trap adapter. Take a picture of your plumbing and take it to a hardware store. It's common, but there are different choices to be made based on what your plumbing is made of and how it's routed.

I'd think that the trap that came with your drain should include a thicker slip fitting exactly for this purpose. It's fairly standard to include it.

To be clear, the drain came with the faucet, and a trap was NOT included.

I'll look for the adapter then. hopefully that does the trick!

Most kits I know have them. You should be able to find just that adapter seal separate, but worst case pick up a cheap P trap kit and it should have it too. I have a couple floating around from drain kits I've used and didn't need the 1 1/4" adapter seal.
