installing new, different ram

Hi,

I'm finally earning some cash, so I've updated my RAM getting:
OCZ Platinum EL PC3200 1GB 2X512MB DDR400 CL2-3-2-5 184PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit W/ Ramsink

I currently have a couple sticks of crucial 256MB DDR, 266 MHZ, CL2.5 PC2100, which i was also running in dual memory.

the mainboard is a asrock 939dual-sata2.

just wondering if i should just use the OCZ memory kit in the one channel, or if it would be ok to keep the crucial in there in the other dual memory position? are there any adverse effects by choosing to do this, or only benefits?

thanks,
mark

You'd be best off with the 2x256 in one set of slots and the 2x512 in the other. Then again if you're not going to use over 1GB you'd be even better off ditching the old stuff entirely as it will slow you down to use it.

so the extra overhead would do nothing? or wouldn't counter the ill effects in any case? i'd only see an improvement if i choose to play battlefield or fear or something?

As a general rule, your faster ram will run at the lowest speed of any ram in the system---and since the 3200 memory is much faster---it would slow to pc2100 speeds and change its timings. But if you really pin a ram company down, they will weasel out of giving you an answer.

But DDR ram runs best in pairs---and now you want answers if 1Gb of new ram will speed up your system---and produce better results than 1.5 GB of ram if you keep your slower PC2100
modules also------so just get a memory benchmarking program---and find out is the best advice I can give you.

But 1 GB of ram should be more than enough for XP---unless you are doing very memory intensive things---but a mere 1 GB may not be enough for vista---so if you have bucks to burn.---get 2 one GB modules of fast ram and be done with it.

Extra overhead? Not sure what you're refering to.

There won't be any extra bandwidth as you'll already be in dual channel mode and you'll still be running at the speed of your old stuff.

If you go from 512 to 1GB then you'll really see the difference. 1GB to 1.5GB you'll get a slight improvement, but it won't be much.
