whenever i click on the install file, nothing happens. this should be able to install underl inux, so that isnt even an issue. i also have that windows application emulator installed, but i cant even install ICQ. is there a linux version? also, this is my first linux install, so im not a guru in anyway.

im under root just to make sure that i have administrative priveleges in order to install new programs. im using Mandrake 7.2

Install Netscape what? What version? Usually Netscape is installed under most of the standard installations.

Software is installed, under Mandrake at least, using something called RPM (Redhat Pacakage Management), or some GUI front end for it, which I think Mandrake provides.

No rpm for that yet. You have to download the install tarball from Netscape, gunzip and untar it, the run the installer.

Personally I wouldn't bother, it's crap. Just stick with the 4.7x for now. You could try the Opera beta, though if you like it you have to pay for it. It seems to be progressing along pretty well now and is quite usuable, though is certainly not bug free.

Ah, right. I wouldn't bother with Netscape, I just use Mozilla M18 (http://www.mozilla.org). They have instructions on how to install it.

Oh, BTW: DON'T USE ROOT FOR DAY-TO-DAY STUFF. Create a normal user that you use for surfing the net, listeing to MP3's, that stuff. Only log in as root when you really need to, alot of stuff you cna do while normal user by opening a terminal and becoming root. (do that by typing su and then root's password. When you're done, type exit)

As for ICQ: There are two ICQ ports for Linux, Licq, and GnomeICU. Both work fine. Don't bother with WINE, it's mainly for trying to run Windows games or some important Windows app, but unless you're really good with Linux it will piss you off and make you hate Linux in general.

Err, I thought LiveUpdate just updated the packages that you already have on your system. I don't think it allows you to add any additional packages.

Here's a tutorial for KPackage...if you wish: KPackage Tutorial

Personally, I suggest you learn to use rpm from command line. It's very easy. The basics are here: RPM Instructions

Finally, I didn't find mozilla any better. I've never used Konquerer, but some people really like it.

I thought I was the only person who hated Netscape 6. This has to be the worst browser I have ever used. I am sticking with Communicator for quite some time. I couldn't even get Netscape 6 to install on my Linux box. Right at the end of the install, it just stops with a sync error. Fun. I got M18 to install, but, it loves to crash randomly.

Gotta love Netscape.

When the hell is Macrosoft going to port IE to Linux, damnit?!@

Well, IE has been developed for the UNIX platform, but so far only for Solaris and HP-UX.

Who knows, they actually get around to breaking up MS and maybe they decide to market IE for the platform.

IE for Linux...oh....the insanity....

I'd be on the lookout for some flying pigs if that ever happened.
