Installing ME over 98SE

I have ME and installed it once on a machine I was building and got Mad and removed It because the cheap sound card did not have drivers fo ME. Anyway I am running 98SE on both our machines that are Tbirds and was wondering If anyone could give me some advice. First question is should I try ME again and second if I did will it install over98 without troubles. I really do not feel like formatting drives and backing up today. Also what if I just tried on one of my network machines, would that mess with my networking?

I wouldn't bother goin back to WinME, most people have found it a pretty bad OS.. If you do go make sure to do a clean install. Upgrades rarely work as they are supposed to.. And if you do put it on one of your network machines everything should be fine.

ME seems to be alot more stable than 98SE....
Did you try loading the 98 drivers for the sound card in ME?
I believe I used the 98 drivers for my NIC and it works...

When I upgraded to ME, I didn't format the HD - I just rename the directory and installed into new.... You will need to install apps...

Well I sold tha machine anyway and left on it. But no ME would not let me force the 98 drivers, but hey it was an Asound (good coffee coaster) I have SBlives in the others over the built in audio. But if it is not worth the upgrade for a bit more stability then I really do not want to go through all that formatting. I did like the look of ME though especially the networking. This machine is pretty stable if I leave the bios ALONE but wifes is a bit flaky and probably needs a format anyway, but got all the company files etc. on it :frown:

Seems like you guys are saying what I expected though and that is to do a clean install if i do not want trouble.

I have a WinME disk I am waiting to be able to use someday...which will probably never come.

I first installed over 98se and it was ok but I kept running into stability problems. I then reformatted and did a fresh install. That really screwed things up. I couldn't figure out my network settings to get it to work 100% with 98se computers, the drivers it recognized for certain cards didn't work, numerous internet problems etc. I went back to 98se but may try it again in a few months when I am sure I have good drivers for all hardware.

Good Luck
