Anyone installed one? Curious what type of brackets they use to keep the passenger from falling off the back. Not much support in that area.

Depends on the bike. Passenger usually holds onto the rider to keep from falling off the back.

The after market ones generally mount to an existing luggage rack, and those are generally pretty firmly mounted to the bike.
I've been thinking about mounting one on my V-Rod, but I'd have to build a hinged mount so I could have it lift up and back to allow access to the saddle bags. I've been so involved in other projects that I haven't done more than look at what hardware I'd need.

Ya, the OEM rack is rated for like 5-10#.

My top case bolted on to the passenger foot pegs and then hangs off the grab bar on the back. My wife leans on it when we are cruising. Very sturdy, but officially they tell you it can only hold like 20lbs and you can go over 60mph.

So is mine. But the reality is that's more than strong enough to support anything I'd put in a top case. If I ever become a traveling anvil salesman I'll have something to worry about.

The rear rack mount for the Ducati Multistrada is attached to the frame of the bike. Honestly, you could probably lift the bike up by this and the Ducati top case is bolted directly onto that rack and has a backrest. I'm thinking of getting it for my bike for when my wife rides with me. It can also hold 2 helmets.

depends on the bike and the maker of the racks. i've installed givi racks on my FZ6R, which went under the passenger grab rail.

the givi racks on my Ninja1000 replace the passenger grab rail. just have your passenger hold on to you.
