Installing Linux?

I dont know what i've been doing wrong, but I downloaded the Ubuntu version of linux from ubuntu.com and as an iso, burned it on a cd and it said just restart, well my computer for some reason doesn't recongnize it as a boot up file? I also changed my bios boot up for cd and still nothing.

Anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

downloaded version: ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso

Thanks for any help...

Yeah, sounds like you didn't burn the image properly - see if your burning software has something like a "burn as image" option.

If you've burned it properly, and set the CD to boot in the BIOS, it will boot to the installer. There's nothing else involved that needs configuring or that is going to go wrong.

hmm well i didn't use a burning program to do so, I extracted all the files to a folder, then sent all the files to the cd.. which when i put the cd in during windows it pops up like a normal cd...

Yeah, that's not gonna work. You've got to burn it as an image if you want a bootable cd. Check out your burning software for a "burn as image" option or something similar.

dang, i dont have burning software....

i only have the windows one, unless that has it built in? which i didn't htink it did which is why i went the route that i did...

This is a nice, simple burner for Windows - all it does is provide a shell extension for .iso files, rather than a whole separate application.

I would also point out, in the nicest possible way, that this is an example of a time where many in the Linux community would expect you to do some legwork on your own. You know you need to burn an ISO, but you're not sure how to do it. Google is your friend. If that comes across as rude or elitist, then Linux is not going to be a good fit for you. It's a different culture than Windows, one that expects you to make a significant attempt at solving problems on your own before asking others for assistance.

well, i burned the appropriate files that were in the iso.

I did not know it wouldn't work the same. The cd booted in windows, which i figured it burned all the appropriate files.

Sorry that I didn't know that you actually had to burn the iso image instead of the intended files.. Thought it would result in the same thing. Guess I was wrong... I didn't come here to iso burning assistance, I came here to ask why the cd i burned wasn't working properly on boot up.

My mistake...

You're not quite getting what I'm saying...

That's nothing to apologize for. You wouldn't be expected to know that, unless you've made bootable CD's before. And you generally don't make bootable CD's unless you're installing Linux. 🙂

What you would be expected to do, after a couple of people responded saying that you needed to burn the iso as an image, is Google for something like "windows burn iso image". At that point, you know what the problem is and what language it's described in. When you started the thread, you didn't. Is the distinction clear?

I'm not trying to rag on you or make you feel stupid or make you apologize for anything. But there is a profound cultural difference between the Linux and Windows user communities - it's just as big a difference as the technical ones. You need to be aware of that going in, or else you will end up very frustrated.

Hey dude, I don't think you made a mistake posting here. You didn't know the CD was burned impropperly. I know you have another thread here asking about some basic questions about linux, and since you are new, I'll give you break, but there are about a billion threads over the exact same questions you had in your other linux thread and you really should have searched the forums on that before you posted. Come to think of it, you really should have searched the forums on your question in this thread too because it also has been covered many many times, and sometimes it just gets frustrating answering the same questions that comes up several times a week.

Ok, now I don't know what burning software you decided on using, but I would also like to say that I HIGHLY recommend ISO Recorder, as cleverhandle linked.
