Installing Linux on an older compaq lappy

I am considering purchasing an older compaq lappy that is now running 3.1. It has a external cd-rom, but I'm not sure if I can boot from it. I am looking for something that I can turn into a very basic 802.11b browsing/aim machine... any ideas? I'd be fine with staying with 3.1, I'm just not sure what the driver support would be like for any 802.11b hardware. thanks!

3.1? WFW 3.1? Look this computer is too old for anything. You can pickup a reasonably good laptop for 400$ which will give you better service and involve a lot less hassle. I would suggest getting hold of Knoppix Live CD and trying it out before you buy. And yes I am very doubtful it will boot off the external cd-rom.

Without knowing what's in the laptop it's hard to say. Sure it would probably work, but if it's too old or has too little memory it might not be worth fighting with.
