installing linux on a SATA drive

Hello

I wanted to install Linux on my computer. is it possible to install linux on a sata drive? would this be considered as a third IDE master?

My computer at present has got the primary and secondary master and slaves all taken up.

would i be abel to access the files on my windows drives?

Using a sata drive would work fine. It will show up as /dev/sda

Depending on the firmware config and the drivers for that chipset it could show up as /dev/sda or /dev/hda if it's the only drive in the machine. But either way, chance are it'll work fine. Linux has had SATA support since the first chipset was released IIRC.

i have got an Gigabyte GA81875 Ultra from 2003, do you think that linux provides SATA support for this somewhat outdated mobo?

ah, yeah, now that you mention it I do remember some (older) hardware showing SATA drives as hd*.

Typically, you have a better chance of linux supporting older hardware (even much older than that) than the latest cutting-edge hardware.

Kinda hard to say for sure but it looks like it's Intel and SiImage stuff so it'll probably be fine.
