Installing IE into Server Core 2008

Well I'm trying to install Serv-U ftp into a fresh instillation of server core 2008. The problem is the install of Serv-U requires that Internet explorer be present for instillation. Is there a way to install internet explorer just to satisfy this requirement?

Nope once you do a core installation the only way to install the GUI stuff is to reinstall the whole thing. It's pretty sad actually how a good idea became pretty useless since you can't cherry pick the software that you want installed on the system.

Yeah, this kinda' shocked me the first time I heard it. Especially not being able to install I.E. There are WAY too many "server-type" things that need I.E.

You can cherry pick all you want, it's called a regular installation.

Which is also sad, a web browser shouldn't be required by any "server-type" things.

It's hardly cherry picking when your options consist of "base install which only really works for DCs" (i.e. core) or "regular install with everything else".

Core works for a lot more than DCs. It's perfect for CAs, DHCP servers and file/print, none of which need IE. Oh, and Hyper-V.

I'm still trying to figure out why Serv-U requires IE. I haven't used it in probably 6 or 7 years, but back then it didn't have any requirements like that that I remember.

Yea, that was a bit of hyperbole but it is still pretty limited and since you can't add stuff to it after the initial installation you're screwed if you ever do need the extra software.

I haven't either but I wouldn't be surprised if their management tool was one of those annoying half-web UIs that uses IE to render.

And it also says "If you need the Windows® user interface or a server role that is not supported in a Server Core installation, you will need to install a full installation of Windows Server 2008."

And the OP specifically asked about IE which isn't supported and can't be added after the fact. The only way to get IE is to blow away your core installation and do a full Win2K8 install.

Who cares. This should be considered a bug in ServU not 2008 server. We will see lots of products support core installs moving forward removing the stupid use of wininet (etc) which should never be used in server products anyhow.

if you went and bought apple software and tried to install it on windows you'd end up having to reinstall your OS too.

You can't program your way out of user stupidity. Folks have to RTFM sometimes.

That's even worse than a car analogy. The software in question runs on Windows, you just can't install it because the core installation is so limited that you can't add more to it than the small list that they've predetermined. If Windows had proper package management it wouldn't be an issue.

I think you're just bitching now.

You can't run GUI software on core. That's what core means. It's what the customer base asked for and if one customer decides he doesn't want that he should have RTFM and not installed core to begin with.
